I read your “What its like to compete and have a partner …” column. Good stuff, but it was written mostly for women. I have an big issue with my dance partner, and I was wondering if you could give me your perspective.
She recently moved here from [another country]. I think she is the most talented Latin dancer in the whole [city]. She’s a real natural. I have a zillion moves that we practice and use together. She also teaches me some really good moves. (more…)
Dear Salsa Freak,
I have just started private Salsa lessons. The challenge I am having is that my wife is now quite an accomplished dancer. The truth is that I just took two classes with her when she started about two years ago, she begged me to go, but because I didn’t like “Salsa” at the time, I quit, and told her never to invite me to a club, because I didn’t like the “scene”. Well, now I never see her anymore, we’re having problems, and I thought I may need to start taking a few Salsa lessons. (more…)
I am intimidated by Latina women. I am just a white girl going to the Latin clubs in [city], and I feel like (sometimes) the Latina women are thinking “who does that girl think she is?!”
This is just in your head. Number one, you don’t have any IDEA what they’re thinking, and number two, who really cares? Stop watching them, and focus on improving YOURSELF. If you cared about what every person thought of you, you would go NUTS trying to accommodate everyone and you would look like an idiot doing it. Don’t expect ANYBODY (not just Latina women) to be very friendly at first (more…)
I love your website. I am an African American woman that accidentally fell in love with Salsa music and Spanish culture in general. I have spent the entire morning browsing through you site. I have two questions that I would like for you to address.
1) I have been a tomboy for the majority of my life and walking on heels has not been easy nor pleasant. Is there a rule that says you can’t Salsa in flats?????? I look graceful and elegant, but I am secure that I won’t lose my balance. I would appreciate your opinion. (more…)
SNAP OUT OF IT!
When dance or life partners upset us, THIS IS A NORMAL FACT OF LIFE.
When something goes wrong, don’t look at your dance partner with that “evil eye” – yes I’m talking about YOU.
Instead, see what lesson there is for you to learn from the experience, brush yourself off and MOVE ON.
The people that disappoint us most in life are truly our Spiritual Teachers in disguise. Remember, it’s now WHAT happens to that matters, it is HOW YOU HANDLED IT that people will REMEMBER. (more…)
When we start learning Salsa, our lives tend to get off balance a bit – a tad off-kilter… a little “off” – TO SAY THE LEAST.Finding the balance between life and Salsa can get scewed QUITE A BIT to feel somewhat “off-center”.If you are a believer, don’t forget Who is “allowing you” to be healthy and love this process. So you’re dancing up a STORM with that FAVORITE dance partner you CANNOT WAIT TO DANCE and get your “Salsa FIX
” WITH.Things get hot and heavy… sweat starts poring down the both of you.
You get close… intimately close. You feel the pulse of the music… she feels it too.You let the music take you closer and closer together. (more…)

Dancing Salsa – Is it sinful???? A Biblical Perspective…
By my Dear Friends, and Brother Sister in the Lord,
Stacey and Francisco… CHRISTIAN DANCERS AND OWNERS of The “Dance Family” Dance Studio in Pasadena, CA
Is it sinful to dance Salsa? No! (But there is a disclaimer to add to it)
We can go to the Bible to understand God’s view on it.

Spirit Dance ** ~ By Francisco Martinez
The leather of his shoes, sharply, caresses the
wooden floor as energy speeds his feet through a
moment in time. Whoa is he when such electricity
hits the air.Mighty eyes watch from above with pleasing
compassion, as the worshipping dancer displays
his celebration to his Father. (more…)
Consider what God says to you personally when you read the following verses.
He will speak to you through reading His word – He promises to … and I think you might just like what He says!

…then your friend does not belong there with you and they should leave.
You’ll meet them another day…. elsewhere.
Like any sport, Salsa dancing is not for everyone.
You can leave with them, but do not let them judge you, lest they be judged.
The love of music and dance, and the expression of it with you and an awesome dance partner is NOT GIVEN TO EVERYONE by God.
We all have a purpose and a Mission here on earth – and only God knows how everything is pieced together – to work PERFECTLY for HIS will, and His will, alone. (more…)
Revelation and the Internet
The Beginning of the End of the World, as we see it unfold before our eyes…*
Edie’s Personal Discovery
By Edie, The Salsa FREAK* Copyright, 1999
When I was in Israel in 1998, I noticed the peculiar-looking Hebrew writing and alphabet written all over the place.* It was written “backwards” to me.* In other words, the strange symbols were read and written from right to left, instead of left to right, like I’m accustomed to.
In Jerusalem, I was impressed at how the stories that I read over the years in countless Bible study courses I’ve taken, were all coming to life right before my eyes.* The thousands of graves up the Mt. of Olives, the 2nd coming or first coming of Christ (depending on what religion you are…) the fighting over the Temple, the controversy of the rebuilding of the Temple, the strange electric energy in the city, the Via de la Rosa (the path Christ walked carrying his cross)… it all just took my breath away.* I was overwhelmed with excitement, sorrow, and curiosity.* (more…)
Christianity and Salsa???
By Edie, The Salsa FREAK
Letter from a Christian Salsero named Josia…
Hi Edie, just wanted to ask if you are Christian and how I can use Salsa as a means of reaching the world through dance ministry.
Yes, I do believe that Jesus was God in the flesh, and He is the only way to the Father.
- John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- John 1:14 – And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.
I was just reading through some of your stories, and I stumbled across your Christianity and Salsa section.
I have to say, that after reading through your words – every one of them resonated with me in every way. Thank you!
I wanted to open up and let you know that Salsa cured the following for me:
- I used to smoke – now clubs don’t allow smoking, and that is where I spend most of my time, so now I quit smoking.
- I used to drink – but it inhibited my dancing and spins, and my friends started complaining about my lead, so I quit drinking.
- I was addicted to porn – but I started spending so much time at Salsa clubs, I would come home trashed and had zero energy to spend time on the Internet – no more interest. (the real thing is FAR better).

When I teach, and/or deal with the public in any way, I think of the Four Standard Personality Types.
I found that the four books written about Christ’s life in the New Testament were written by four entirely different people with completely different personality types. (more…)
I’ve noticed that you mention God quite a few times and some Church activity, so I have a question for you:
I am 18, an active member at my Church, AWANA leader, Sunday school teacher, a helper in the youth group, and the list goes on.
My situation is, is that I have gotten a lot of negative feed back because if my love of dance. Along with a couple other persons, I was kicked out of a temporary singing group because one of the rules was absolutely no dancing. Something very impossible for me.
I do use my talents of dancing for God. I have done a lot of dance interpretation for church and related activities. But I also have a great passion for dancing, most importantly for Salsa. I feel great when I dance, I feel happy, I have even started to lose weight since I started to take Salsa lessons. (more…)
Why I Salsa.
By Black Belt Salsa Instructor, and Born-Again Christian, Carlos Colon
[2Chor 4:6]“God, who first ordered light to shine in the darkness, has now flooded our hearts with His light. We can now give all men the knowledge of the glory of God as we see it in the face of Christ. [Col 1:28]So, naturally, we proclaim Christ. [1Thess 2:4]We speak under the solemn sense that we have been entrusted by God with the gospel, [Rom 1:16] for we are not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of salvation for those who believe. For non-believers, [Rom 10:14-15] how can they call on one in whom they have not believed? How can they believe in one of whom they have not heard? How can they hear unless someone proclaims Him?
