Shines Traditions

Just FYI…

In New York, traditionally, when there is one instructor teaching Shines to both male and female students On2, the tradition has always been to train on women’s timing.
Why? No idea.
Refer to the “Baked Ham” story I told on Monday.

In Los Angeles, traditionally, when there is one instructor teaching Shines to both male and female students On1, the tradition has always been to train on men’s timing.
Why? No idea.
Again, refer to the “Baked Ham” story from Monday.

However, there are a few schools in New York and New Jersey that have since changed their group class warmup Shines to match what we do at BBS (men on one side, women on the other) because it simply makes more sense.  The former previous tradition above is slowly fading out.

As for Los Angeles, I am not sure what they are doing now, as I no longer have contacts there like I do in New York.

The following is a recent letter to a world-famous Salsa Instructor who now travels the world teaching this beautiful dance.  Here is my response to our “right and left break turn” ongoing discussion:

Dear {Instructor name},

Wow.  I just got done watching the Eddie Torres instructional video you sent to me from the early 90’s.

I haven’t seen that video … since 1995!!! Thank you for sending me that video for his right break turn version.  It was a BLAST from the PAST!

After watching the video a few times, I look at it COMPLETELY differently, now, than when I did 30 years ago. There are ssssooo many tiny things, here and there, that we have tweaked and improved upon since then.  I see exactly what you mean about Duplessy’s turns with Angel.  (Miss him so much BTW).  As for Eddie Torres, I have ALOT OF RESPECT for what he created and pulled out of his ass to develop a “standard” that New Yorkers ended up following.  It made sense at the time – there was nothing else out there to compare it to, so all of us just “went with it”.

Myself included – to a point.

Standards have always been, and will be, tough to implement, especially for this type of passionate social dance, where we are supposed to be HAVING FUN, while trying to come home from our corporate day-job where rules / regulations / molds to fit in … and stresses to endure, are the norm.  Dance is FREEDOM from all that, so we seek that freedom by going to an evening dance class to simply have fun, move our bodies a bit, meet and laugh with people, …. but end up having to CONFORM to rules / regulations / molds to fit in… and the resulting stresses to endure.

It’s tough being a dance instructor!!   Did you know that Perplexity.ai told me that being a partner dance instructor is one of the toughest jobs there is?  It ranks right up with with AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS!!!

To top things off, too many Pro instructors believe (some of whom I respect / admire./ like etc) believe that  “their way” is the “right way” because … it’s “been this way forever”, or “I learned from such and such, and he is my Salsa God and he has always done it this way, and he invented it”…

Little do they realize how some of “such and such”‘s moves actually feel like CRAP compared to a “nobody” who makes her heart melt and puts her into Fantasy Land EVERY DANCE she has with him – AAAAaaaaand… she wants to have ALL of his babies after that dance is over.

… remind me to tell you the Baked Ham story.
You will sssooo be able to relate after you hear it.

Since 1994, from dancing with LITERALLY thousands of men throughout the world, what I have learned from those experiences, has given me a VERY UNIQUE perspective of what feels good, vs what these guys THINK and have been TAUGHT feels good for the ladies.

  • I go to New York, and love dancing there with everybody because of THEIR style.  Some moves hurt, others don’t.
  • I go to Los Angeles, and love dancing there with everybody because of THEIR style.  Some moves hurt, others don’t.
  • I go to Europe, and love dancing there with everybody because of THEIR style.  Some moves hurt, others don’t.
  • I go to  Asia, and love dancing there with everybody because of THEIR style.  Some moves hurt, others don’t.

So.
Because my last dance partner was… let’s just say… he used to have a drinking problem (but – thank God – has since sobered up), he would sleep in and forget about his class.   There were times, I had to teach various classes in his absence.  The Men’s Styling workshops were the most fun.   I ended up teaching them all by myself, to cover for him, in order to still be paid for the event.  As a female, I always taught Men’s Styling classes with female partners because I saw men that I danced with that STYLED BEAUTIFULLY DURING the partner work, rather than only during Shines.  ANYONE can teach a Mens’ Styling class doing Shines.  That’s the simplest thing on earth.  But the way some men Style during partner work is EXTREMELY impressive, yet overlooked during high-profile Congresses and workshops.

Literally, I was a first-hand witness to that type of Men’s Styling during partner work, because I had always been RIGHT THERE, in his arms while he executed his impressive MASCULINE Styling!

So many top leads do little things here and there during partner work, that are sssooooo Masculine and ssssooo IMPRESSIVE… but those “masculine things” are RARELY if EVER TAUGHT!!

I decided right then and there, that in order to get that feeling from MANY men I danced with, rather than a select few, I had to teach AS MANY MEN AS I COULD how to give that same feeling to women.

There was a point in time, that I realized… that I HAD to finally learn how to lead to get the point across.  There were times that I felt like screaming from the hilltops, watching these guys teach on-stage what they “thought” was correct, vs WHAT THEY WERE ACTUALLY DOING ON THE DANCE FLOOR.  They COMPLETELY MISSED the very cool parts of their leads, and only taught was was taught to THEM years ago.

It’s a darn shame that ssssoooo many male students miss out on the type of instruction they SHOULD RECEIVE, but instead, only get rote repetitions from instructors who teach what they themselves learned from past instructors – instead of what they are ACTUALLY DOING – which looks SUPER COOL, but they DO NOT TEACH IT.   Ref:  Baked Ham story

I was sick and tired of waiting ALL NIGHT for the ONE GUY in the ENTIRE CLUB that had that EMERALD, SILKY, WONDERFULLY ASTONISHING, FANTASY LEAD.  And when I did, he was too tired to dance with me because every woman in the club had already danced with him all night.  He didn’t teach, but was a born dancer – probably had.a corporate job of some sort… and was just “having fun”.   LOL.

I so desperately wanted to teach men what these guys WERE ACTUALLY DOING so more men could do the same!

I realized, that in order to get the word out, (and for VERY selfish reasons – I wanted to get my FIX with MORE MEN)…  I had to reverse-engineer what the guys were doing – and NOT doing – to make their leads good or bad.

I would compare a CBL that one guy did, and a CBL that another guy did, and ask myself,
“Self, WTF???… what is THIS guy going in his CBL or Basic, that feels ssssooooo good, and what is this OTHER guy going in his CBL or Basic, that feels like shit?”   Worse, some guys made me feel like I could REALLY dance beautifully, while others felt like I had to go back and take private lessons ALL OVER AGAIN.

I studied leads, with a passion – quietly, since 2004.  Why?  Because I knew some day, I would create my own curriculum that took the BEST OF THE BEST qualities of those magnificent leads and culminate all of them into a SINGLE curriculum – built to please women!  I would make CERTAIN that this new curriculum would SATISFY a woman at EVERY LEVEL.
From White Belt through Black Belt.

A few examples from the Black Belt Salsa curriculum:
  • No more little pinky up from the leads – ladies need to feel his pinky on her fingertips – test it out.  When she feels his pinky with her fingertips, she can “feel” his lead much better.

  • No more stepping back so large – ladies can take a larger “7” forward, making her weigh less / feel lighter.  Typically curing a CBL.  We take a short “2” and short “6” to become super fast on the dancefloor.  Ref:  https://youtu.be/74AMEZ4D000?si=vqJdDY3dTwb5JdmNThe short 2 and 6 eliminates the “ouch!  you stepped on my foot!” from the guy behind you that you just struck oil on his foot with your high heel.  LOL.   So we do a “Long, short Long” step now.  This also allows your body to take up more space because now your legs and feet are under you, rather than behind you.

  • We apply considerably more “Down The Body” (DTB) moves – we calculated that there are 94 different ways to turn the man and the woman, in total for both men and women, for a single left break turn.   AND, the same for a single right break turn.    We haven’t even gotten to doubles yet!  We teach two types of prep.  The “D” prep and the “O” prep – Green Belt.

  • We no longer call a CBL turn her right, a NY Walk or a Bridge walk-thru.  It’s just a “CBL Right”.  We call a CBL where she does a half turn, just a normal “CBL”, or a “CBL Left”.  This facilitates having to explain things A LOT when you go opposite side (our 1st degree Camo belt).

  • We have eliminated the terms “inside turn, outside turn, underarm turn” etc.  We  no longer say “Cross Body Lead with an inside or outside turn…” …. AT ALL.  We call them Progressive Lefts and Progressive Rights.  Why?  Because an inside turn goes “inside” the egg (frame) in front of the giro, and and “outside” goes outside the egg (frame).  (we call frame, the Egg, because of the shape we make when we explain it – less formal and more fun to joke around with during class… and I love omelettes).   LOL.

… the above are just a few examples of what I teach now.  I tell the guys, “If you simply follow this curriculum to a Tee, you will NEVER have to worry about pleasing the woman.  Ever.”

The BBS curriculum was built by a woman who danced with over 10,000 men from all over the world, culminated the Best of the Best leader techniques, and created a single curriculum for men to understand just WTF these guys are doing to make the women feel sssssooooo GOOD!!

I know I just wrote a small novel, but I guess since I respect you sssssooooo much {instructor name}, that you are one of the few mature men on this planet that would actually read it, understand it, and see why I HAD to create Black Belt Salsa.

I had no choice.

The BBS curriculum is and has never been set in stone.  We keep it flexible and tweak it every once in a while – always with room for improvement, and keeping up with new ideas and techniques that our Instructors question and come up with.  I just LOVE the system.  We don’t teach moves or patterns that have to be memorized.  We teach a “system” that ends up creating UNLIMITED patterns.

People often tell me, “Edie, your instructors are not teaching amalgamations./ patterns / combos… but their students know more amalgamations./ patterns  and combos more than anyone at the clubs!”

That’s the goal.   Forget about pattern memorization.  Teach technique and Fundamentals FIRST AND FOREMOST – once that is set, all else falls into place on its own.

It’s working.
Looking forward to your reply…

We ALWAYS a BLAST!!

How to become the “Cream of the Crop”.

There’s no substitute for hard work and 10,000 hours.

There’s no substitute for a leader’s ability to follow. The BEST leaders in the world are GREAT followers.

They understand, finally, what they’re putting their partner through.

When you put yourself in another person shoes, that is the birth of Compassion.

Being humble, the way you understand it, versus being compassionate, are two separate things, depending on the context.

However, having compassion in everything you do, CREATES humbleness.

Dancing with performers, never impressed me.

Dancing with showoffs never impressed me.

Dancing with a guy that puts me into shine’s 50% of the song never impressed me.

Dancing with guys who only dance for themselves and never look at me nor take care of me on the floor, never impressed me.

The World’s Best Leads instructional DVD series that I did with some of the top leads in the world is just that. The top LEADERS in the world. NOT the top performers.

Performers, that basically leave me there and start dancing for themselves, by themselves, completely forget about how I feel, leave me feeling used and worthless.

Focus on becoming a World Class LEADER.   Nothing less.

Focus on making sure SHE is OK, that SHE feels good, that SHE feels loved and protected and cherished.

TRUE world class leads have GREAT compassion and RESPECT for those that follow them.

if you do this, you will be loved.

Maximizing Your Congress Experience

I ramped up from a few congresses per year from the year 1997, until 2008, where I was in 54 congresses in one year.  How is that passible?  I was at two different countries over a single weekend, and the promoters shared my expenses!  LOL.

I was asked by one of my instructors the other day, “What is the best way to experience a Salsa congress?”

Here was my response:

1. Wear Comfortable dance shoes. Bring shoe goo for repairs. Bring safety pins for clothing g fixes.

2. If you’re going to fly to a congress, make sure you put every outfit in its own clear plastic sack, this includes shoes, undies, pants, shirt, jewelry, etc., do this per night, and do this per day. You will wear something different during the days then you will the nights.

The reason for the plastic bag is just in case they leave your suitcase outside in a rain or snowstorm while you were watching it soaked from the comfortable seat of your airplane.

Will also prevent mold from accumulating after an 18 to 20 our flight.

3. Unless you enjoy the shows, skip them all together. Go to your room take a nap. After the shows are over, get up and dance till 4 AM. You will not only have some of the best dances in the world with the performer who performed that night, but the promoters will also notice that you were dancing with everyone, and may invite you back for free next year.

4. Don’t drink.

It sucks all the energy right out from under you. Plus, she can’t spin, and people can tell you’ve been drinking.

Same goes for smoking. You may think you can hide your breath, or hide your drunkenness, but it’s written all over you ESPECIALLY once they touch your hand.

5.. smile, smile, smile, SMULE! You’ll get asked to dance more!

Smiles are contagious, even if you fake a smile, when you smile, everybody else in the room and smiling!

6. Look good out there! GIRLS: Wear nice clothes, get your nails done get your toes done get your hair done, wear nice make up.

GUYS: Look good out there. Look as masculine as possible. Don’t do any of the above.

7. Dance with people you don’t normally dance with in Denver. Venture out and feel different styles from different states / countries.

8. Social DANCE -don’t social IZE.
Talking and gossip are not what you want to spend your valuable time on.

9. Go ALONE – bring your boyfriend/girlfriend/friend, and you will regret it. And them.

10. Take as many workshops as you can and be up front / center. Don’t try to learn in the middle nor back.

11. When social dancing, stay on the edges and then WORK THE WNTIRE BALLROOM FLOOR during the song – don’t just dance in one spot. No one will see you.
Why do you want to be seen?

Because the promoters may invite you back because you’re dancing with everybody. And then they will invite you back for free. They may even ask if you can teach a workshop for free. You gotta work for free for a few years before you start getting paid.

And it starts on the dance floor. You’re dancing with everybody you’re dancing with beginner you’re dancing with everybody. They love it when people dance with beginners. And beginners will tell the promoter how nice you are. And then the promoters will invite you. Maybe eventually they will pay you.

12. Make yourself MEMORABLE. So that people will WANT to dance with you and take videos dancing with you.

Ladies – be LADYLIKE.
Men – be Gentlemen.

Living Blissfully

It’s so much more satisfying to get into a blissful place and attract a blissful person and live blissfully ever after, than to be in a negative place, attracting negative partners, and then trying to pretend you are happy from those negative surroundings. – Abraham

The Self

People say that this or that person has not yet found themselves. But the “self” is not something you “find”, it is something you “create.”
