Learn to Salsa dance with Edie, The Salsa FREAK!!
by Jessica Wilson

I was very flattered when Edie asked me to submit my letter to her newsletter. I hope that what I have written here doesn’t offend too many people and that they can see beyond any poorly-worded phrases and not misinterpret me too severely. According to Edie’s reaction to my original letter, it seems there are others out there who will be able to relate to my story. I look forward (I think) to hearing what people have to say about my experiences. Here goes… (more…)

The Secret to Growing Taller

How I Grew Over an Inch in Height After the Age of Forty
By Edie, The Salsa FREAK!!

I’ve always been a short person but I used to be even shorter. I remember friends at high school and college leaning their bodies on me with their forearms pressed on top my shoulders. They would often call me shorty and were forever asking how tall I was. Even at the age of thirty, when I started dancing Salsa, friends would do the same thing again. I would often find myself bragging that I was a whopping Five foot One and three quarter inches on a GOOD day, when all the PLANETS are lined up correctly. (more…)

Joseph Daniel DeMers

Frame Matching is a codified theory of partner-dance connection. It establishes a framework for breaking down and teaching Swing and Blues dance connection. It is the act of creating, maintaining, or changing tension between partners with posture and tone, in order to lead and follow energy and direction. Frame Matching is explained in terms of changes in posture, tone, tension, energy, and the direction of energy (ΔPTED). (more…)

By Edie, The Salsa FREAK!!“He thanked me for this wonderful Valentine’s Gift.” As a tear started to fall down her cheek…It was a few years ago on Valentine’s Day. I was at some Salsa club, in some country some place, dancing up a STORM with a few of the best World-Cl*** leads I’ve ever known.

I decided to take a breather and watch the incredible dancers on the floor for a song or two.

I noticed an older gentleman walk up to one of the women standing on the sidelines of the dance floor, who just waiting (LONGING) to be asked to dance. She was nothing glamorous nor (more…)

Surviving a Dance Partnership
A Few Words of Wisdom, From Edie, The Salsa FREAK
Aaaahhh…. The Things I’ve Learned…

I was inspired to write this article by a newlywed couple that took a private lesson from me in Innsbruck, Austria. They were dance partners, and had only been married four months. They were both excellent dancers in their own styles. He had an amazing Hip Hop and Samba background, while she was an accomplished professional ballroom instructor, with additional experience in jazz, ballet and tap since the age of six. Both could dance Salsa relatively well, however as a relatively inexperienced lead, his uphill climb was

“Dear Edie,
I read your response to “Just Trying to Help” concerning his jealous partner. The same thing happened to me except I was the jealous one.
My EX-fiance is a dance instructor and has been dancing for many years. I on the other hand am new to the dance scene. I really love it and am addicted to Salsa. However, I am not very good…yet. When we started going out we would go to the clubs together and dance all night and (more…)

Figure #1: “Fantasy Land”

“Dear Edie,
I’ve been noticing lately that women are far more sexually aggressive these days than men. Wow. It’s like, I just wanna dance, but lately, it seems they always want something more. I feel like some of them are sex-starved or something.

Salsa Dance Styles of the World

What is the difference between Puerto Rican style, Cuban Style, LA Style, New York Style, Colombian Style, Cali Style, Cuban Style, and now… Musicality Style?

New York “On-2” and Puerto Rican Style Salsa
Well, let me explain. The Puerto Rican style can be danced on the “One” or the “Two” beat of the music, but it involves a tremendous amount of very technical footwork (“Solo” if you’re from LA, or what they call “Shines” in New York.) (more…)
